These shielded cables are a highly effective and economical way to reduce electric fields and "dirty electricity" (a component of the electric field) which normally emanates from all energized wiring.

Normal extension cords are not shielded. The conductors inside the cord of a typical cord are just covered in plastic. This allows the electric field - measured in volts per meter - to freely flow like smoke out into the environment.
These alternating-current electric fields are switching from positive to negative and drawing the electrons in one's body and then repelling them, causing oscillation. In particular the high frequencies ("dirty electricity") are believed to be the most harmful.
The International Institute for Building Biology and Ecology sets standards for exposure to electric fields at .3 volts per meter.

A couple of customers have told us that they bought a shielded extension cord and had a professional replace a lamp cord with the shielded cord. I you're thinking of doing this, we recommend using only a qualified professional.
If you're not quite ready to invest in the safety of a Shielded Extension Cord, - here are some important tips that we want you to follow to stay safer while using standard un-grounded typical extension cords:
- Always keep your power strips, extension cords and power cords separate from each other. Cords that touch and get tangled will increase your exposure to this electrical and magnetic EMF and ELF
- Lower your EMF and Fire risk by checking your cords from time to time to make sure they don't have any wear and tear that may expose you to more EMF and an electrical fire. Get some new ones and stay safe.
- Remember- All Extension and Power Cords That Are Not grounded or shielded- the regular ones from the hardware store- will and do emit EMF.
- Try and keep a good 2 to 5' away from those cords. Keep furniture away from them as well!
- When you run your cords, run them flat. Do not criss-cross them, bunch them up or pile them up on top of each other. Doing anything other than running your cords flat could increase EMF exposure
- Unplug regular extension cords and power cords when you're not using them.
