Blue Light From Screens Disturbs Sleep And Can Harm Your Vision
Blue light goes from 450 to 480 nanometers. Let me tell you about what research says about the particular light in the range of 400 to 500 nanometers. It’s worth knowing because it can:
-
hurt retinas
-
change circadian rhythms, making it difficult for kids to get to sleep, stay asleep or sleep well.
-
increase cortisol and decrease melatonin levels ,affect memory, alertness and concentration
-
possibly contribute to early puberty
Blue light, whether it’s occurring naturally or is man-made, is also called High Energy Visible Light or HEV. Even though it’s a fraction of the HEV light emitted by the sun, it’s still a big problem, because our kids are spending so much time under bright LED’s and screens.
Blue-light exposure at the wrong time stops the release of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that occurs naturally in all of us, and, among other wonderful things, it does make us sleepy. Not having it at the right time can keep us from falling asleep and staying asleep. A friend told me to think of it this way: The sun rises, melatonin “sets,” The sun sets and melatonin rises.
Lack of melatonin has been linked to not only problems with sleep, but inflammation, immune function, insulin and even cancer.
A recent meta-analysis entitled “Blue Light Exposure Ocular Hazards and Prevention” concludes with, “currently there is no evidence that LEDs (used in screens btw) used normally or in screens are retinotoxic27. However, potential toxicity of long-term cumulative exposure and the dose-response effect are currently unknown.”
So what the study is telling us is that exposure to blue light from the LEDs in screens is not toxic to our retinas, or at least it isn’t currently considered toxic, but we don’t know what we’ll find out about screen effects as time goes on.
The truth is, how would we really know? As humans, we’ve never been in this situation before: everyone on screens for hours and hours a day, beginning at a very young age…
The summary of the study had a few warning points specifically relating to kids. It tells us there are potential damaging effects to all of our eyes from blue-light exposure but they are not quite sure about how young children, with their light sensitivity, will fare after being exposed over and over again to LEDs in particular, once they’re adults. They write,: “Questions remain about the long-term cumulative exposure of blue light (and particularly LEDs emitting cold white light) and the potential deleterious effects on their ocular health in late adulthood, particularly for specific light-sensitive population.
