How EMF Protection Works. Blockers, Shields, Harmonizers and Phone Chips Reviewed
We're Asked ALL The Time:
Which EMF Clothing, underwear, cap, case, crystal, harmonizer or laptop
or phone defending or blocking shield does Tech Wellness recommend?
We always have to give the same answer:
NONE OF THEM. The number of EMF blockers, shields, harmonizers and phone chips that are actually proven to work = 0.
Sadly, there's a super good reason we don't recommend EMF clothing or any of these products that claim to give you EMF protection.
We've tried them.
In fact, we've noticed that they often made us feel WORSE. Then our EMF meters and deep dives into scientific research showed us why. In the best case scenario, these devices do nothing at all to protect from EMF. In the worse case, they can actually make your exposure level HIGHER.
This isn't the answer we would like to be giving. We'd much rather be telling you we found something that protects you from 99% of the electromagnetic radiation coming from your iPhone, your Android smartphone, your WiFi and your laptop.
Today, If you've bought into the hype and heavy advertising and now are trusting an EMF harmonizer, Shungite, an EMF Shielding case, crystals healing packs, a cap or hat or sweater or a pregnancy EMF radiation protection belly band a cloth with silver thread or a chip or shield to stick on your device to protect you from EMF, sorry to say that you could be exposing yourself to more EMF than you would if you had nothing at all.
But don't worry. We've found that the absolute best EMF protection you can take advantage of is FREE!
Put DISTANCE between yourself and the source of the EMF. Distance Is Your Friend.
Practically speaking, don't carry a phone that's on in your hand, in your pocket or--please--in your bra. Stay away from the WiFi, turn it off when you're not using it and please, when you get a new one, don't buy a powerful WiFi. You're just subjecting your home and family to more EMF.
At the end of this article, we've got 10 really easy and healthy ideas that do work!
10 Reasons Why We Don't Sell Laptop Shields, Anti-Radiation Cases, EMF Protection Chips, EMF Clothing Protection, Harmonizers, Crystals or Shungite.
1. The Scientific Research Is Lacking When It Comes To Proof That Stickers and Chips for Phones or Necklaces or Shungite or Harmonizers Can Protect From Or Reduce Radiation
In fact, harmonizers, whether they're shaped like colored glass flying saucers or round pieces of wood wrapped with copper threads, whether they're Q-links, scaler energy devices, crystals, Shungite necklaces, stickers, chips or shields--do not stop EMF radiation and there is zero proof that they are protecting you from the harmful health effects of EMF.
EMF protection products that claim to harmonize energy "give the illusion of safety," according to Dr. Klinghardt. You can read about my experience with Somavedic - a device that calls itself the "Ultimate EMF Mitigation Device".
The Verge published an article where they mention me, August Brice, in a story about EMF Snake Oil Products. The Verge says does not say that I sell "those" kinds of products and they write that as an EHS sufferer, I often "debunk" other shielding devices as unhelpful and goes on to say I sell my own line of products. I don't sell what anyone would call "Snake Oil" but I didn't mind getting credit for trying to bring forward truth.
The Snake Oil story was correct, I do debunk questionable EMF Protection. I often show why a product isn't doing what it claims by sharing the the product's own research.
In their report, Verge linked a WaveGuard or Qi Study in which the researchers concluded "no clear effects"
They shared this research from Fraunhofer, and said it was actually sponsored by Wave Guard. The conclusion section of the report says,
"In sum, the study showed no clear effects of a one-week exposure with the Qi-Shield on subjective well-being, stress, and sleep quality examined on a psychological, psycho-physiological, and neurophysiological level. Nonetheless, the results of frontal theta power increase should be subject of further studies."
Did you see the final sentence? The part about the frontal theta power increase? I wondered too what that meant, so I followed this link.
Going Deep Into Research We Learn More--But Who Has The Time?
In this Final Report of over 100 pages, the researchers site other research about elevated Theta power, a snippet like the one below, seems to say higher theta may not be a good thing, but read the report and make your own conclusions.
Increased theta power has been found in resting state EEG in individuals
with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD; Woltering et al.,
2012) and increased mental fatigue during a demanding mental task
(Wascher et al., 2014).
Meanwhile, a new Brain Wave study from University of Maryland, USC and Columbia University researchers shows evidence that higher theta power during resting states is linked to lower executive function and attention and language skills.
A scientist I know tells me, Theta waves are not easy to interpret. They are associated with retrieving memories, attention etc. but the issue is that too low or too high levels are problematic (e.g., indicating attention deficit). Thus, increasing Theta waves can be bad, if someone is high on the spectrum, but can be beneficial, if someone is low on the spectrum.
Finally, I have to tell you this: Scientists recently did the first very well controlled for EMF, EMF and Brain Wave Study. They didn't notice any effect from EMF on Theta waves. They did notice an affect on Alpha brain waves however, but those waves are not Theta waves.
I get top notch research guidance when I look into any product's studies. World renowned EMF expert Olle Johansson breaks down what the research is really saying vs the what the heavily advertised, made harmonizer Somavedic was claiming in our article here. You have to read it for yourself. The folks at Somavedic actually took legal action against me to have the article removed. After months of legal wrangling, during which time I completely stood by the story and it remained live on our site, I agreed to remove about 20 words from the longest story on Tech Wellness. The article you can read today, is as clearly skeptical of this product as it was the first day it was written. It's worth a read because this company is still in business and vaguely promises that it "respond(s) to certain frequencies of electromagnetic radiation" and "transforms EMF" and can cost up to $5650. There's even a new bracelet that "absorbs and stores energy from your Somavedic device, providing 12 to 48 hours of harmonizing energy." I am not making this up. The company had asked me to sell the product for them and I could earn a hefty commission. (Realize that often influencers themselves are influenced by big commissions.) So, I actually purchased two Somavedics at full price to see for myself. I didn't find they made it easier to sleep, or addressed any EHS symptoms.
Instead of relying on claims, look for truth in the details of the research
It's puzzling to me, because it's pretty clear that if the research a product is using says "no clear effects," than why do people invest in them? Is it because they don't expect you to read the research? I get it. People don't have the time and most people do have a lot of trust that if there are product claims and customer testimonials that it must really work.
Why would a company publish research that clearly states their product doesn't work as intended and then try to see you that product? Are they crazy? Or do they know that more than likely most people won't take time to read it or analyze the results so they have nothing to lose. I just broke down one of the many biological effect studies that the Wave Guard has on their site.
I use it simply as an example of why I'm not compelled to offer it as an option on our site or affiliate with this harmonizer.
And it's even more confusing when people who put on EMF Summits and Conferences align with these products.
If I were shopping for relief from EMF, I would put more trust in someone who says that they are sensitive to the invisible energy, so much so that they started a website and offer items to help people deal with EMF. As I write this, I'm smiling because actually that's exactly what I do- except I started about a decade earlier. But the point is, as you know, I wouldn't recommend a product based on a study of sleep and theta brain waves that came to a "no clear effects" conclusion. But that's exactly what Tara Williams does as a guest on a podcast hosted by a man who says he's an advocate for safe tech.
This year the EMF Guy, had the owner of the Conscious Spaces company on his podcast to talk about EHS and Harmonizers . This company first introduced and continues to sell Wave Guard as EMF Protection. Williams, who claims she has EHS, talked about including Wave Guard noting that they have 25 studies behind them, "I really like looking at what they've done to date study-wise especially the one on sleep where they found that increased optimal theta wave production."
I think she's referring to that Fraunhofer study above and I'm wondering why she especially likes a study that says in it's main findings that there was no significant effect on sleep quality.
On a positive note, both the EMF Guy and the WaveGuard retailer, both agree that there needs to be more research. The EMF Guy says he also has a podcast with the creator of Wave Guard.
But-the association can be very confusing for viewers and followers because it can look like an endorsement for the Qi or Waveguard. Especially when they both talk about completely agreeing with each other's points of view. The bottom line: Conscious Spaces sells a product they call EMF Protection and the EMF GUY sells a Summit.
This retailer of the Wave Guard sent me many emails to join the EMF Hazards summit. The link has what looks like an affiliate link. Affiliates get commissions when people use their link to sign up and the summit gets that persons email address. And it looks like The EMF Guy also gets some sort of affiliate payment when he sends people to her site from his channel: = https://consciousspaces.com/?ref=thee...
EMF Protection Placebos
As far as more unconvincing research on Harmonizers: The Qi or Wave Guard and the Somavedic both are certified by Dartsch and Bion like most other harmonizers are. They also do very similar research studies and both include them on their websites. goes here . . . https://consciousspaces.com/en-us?ref=theemfguy
It's puzzling to me, because if you take the time to actually read the research and see statements like the one above where the scientist announces "no clear effects," than why do people invest in them?
The most important recommendation I have: EMF is real, please don't be lulled into a false sense of security.
There is no silver bullet of safety, besides avoidance of the invisible fields.
I'm not sure how harmonizers can make claims saying that they "reduce the health risks of EMF" that's not what the research from Fraunhofer Institute of Industrial Engineering reported in their report on Qi-Shield also called Wave Guard.
In this video. Dr. Klinghardt talks about a 5 year study of "Crystal Containing Devices" that were thought to actually help clean up the dirty electricity around chickens. At first, it seemed to help but then the chickens ended up dying twice as early as the other chickens that were not protected!
He says these "EMF Protection" products are "selling wildly because people are making alot of money because they create an illusion of safety."
This is a clip from an interview with Dr. Mercola who wrote the book, EMF'D. Dr. Klinghardt basically advises that it's better to "feel" the negative effects of EMF radiation instead of depending on products that could "mask" the energy with harmonizing energy that may make you feel better in the short run, but doesn't actually do anything to stop the detrimental effect of electromagnetic fields.
"Clearly, If people use devices to make them feel good while they’re in a devastating illness-producing field, you will get higher cancer rates, you will die earlier than your friend who does not have these 'electrical cleaning' devices and feel the discomfort..." is how Dr. Klinghardt puts it.
2. Anti Radiation Phone Cases DO NOT OFFER EFFECTIVE EMF PROTECTION
I can not recommend any of these cases for my family and my friends. In face, iPhone EMF shielding cases, Android EMF shielding cases, in fact all EMF protection cases give users a false sense of security. They think they are protected but they are only partially protected. In face, with most of the cases only the ears are protected from EMF radiation leaving the head, handles, and body 100% exposed.
I wish it wasn't true, but being honest, these can make the radiation worse by magnifying it on the edges of what the case is covering. Covering the front of the case does not protect you from the radiation coming from all sides and TOP of the phone. The video shows the readings and gives you a good demonstration of how they work.
Hard Wire Devices With Ethernet Cables Instead of WiFi is an Excellent EMF Protection Method That Actually Works By Eliminating the Wireless BlueTooth, WiFi and Cell Signals.
As I type this article now, I am completely hard wired. I have a hardwired mouse and hardwired keyboard which connect to my computer which is joyfully connected to the internet via shielded Ethernet cables. I AM HAPPY!
3. Laptop Shields Do Not Give Adequate EMF Protection To My Loved Ones
A friend and EMF expert who is EMF sensitive like me, does recommend using a laptop shield! But this is HOW to use a shield according to Jeromy Johnson who talks about the laptop pad on his website, EMFanalysis:
"I put one above and below my laptop computer (I use an external keyboard and mouse). They can reduce some of the microwave radiation component (if you use WiFi), along with magnetic and electrical fields that your computer emits."
Jeromy showed me a picture of this setup once. He had the shielded computer a good 2 feet away as he used the wired keyboard.
4. The National Center For Health Research Does Not Recommend EMF Protective Phone Shields. Investigation of Shielding Materials and EMF Demonstrates How EMF Bounce Back At You.
This is from a 2023 peer reviewed published journal from authors Ján Zbojovský et-al, titled Investigation of Shielding Materials for the Purpose of Shielding Electromagnetic Fields.

EMF Bounces Protection Shields Like Tee Shirts, EMF Pouches, Phone Cases and Laptop Shields and this shows how researchers detect it.

This material shields only the parts of your body that it is covering by deflecting the electromagnetic radiation.
5. If You Need More Proof Here You Go - The FCC Cautions Against EMF Protection Scams
“If you're looking for ways to limit your exposure to the electromagnetic emissions from your cell phone, know that, according to the FTC, there is no scientific proof that so-called shields significantly reduced exposure from these electromagnetic emissions. In fact, products that block only the earpiece—or another small portion of the phone—are totally ineffective because the entire phone emits electromagnetic waves. What's more, these shields may interfere with the phone's signal, cause it to draw even more power to communicate with the base station, and possibly emit more radiation.”

6. Independent Research Labs Have Published Scientific Research Showing Shields Are NOT EFFECTIVE
7. Research Shows Radiation Can Increase With EMF Protection Shielding
The video below shows how a shielding pouch doesn't offer more than 20% protection and in this demonstration, a 5G phone shield increases the EMF levels on the meter by over 20%.

8. A Shungite Rock or Chunk Placed In Your Home Offers As Much EMF Protection As A Piece Of Metal Cloth Sitting On a Coffee Table. (Which is NO Protection!)
The problem with using Shungite as shielding is that you have to have a lot of it! Like metal material, it must cover the entire surface of what you're trying to shield. Just a chunk of Shungite sitting on a table or putting a Shungite pendant around your neck won't do much of anything. Shungite only blocks EMF under the small area it covers.
9. Anti-Radiation or Shielding Clothing and Other EMF Protection Products Offer Protection That's VERY Limited
Home Shielding Done Right, Is The Right Idea for EMF Protection That Can Work To Keep Your Family Safer
10. EMF Shielding Protection Research Reveals Problems With Chips, Cases and Shielded Clothing
Research Shows Radiation Can Increase With EMF Protection Shielding
The video below shows how a shielding pouch doesn't offer more than 20% protection and in this demonstration, a 5G phone shield increases the EMF levels on the meter by over 20%.
Unfortunately, shielding is very problematic.
Even one of the creators of shielding caps, cases and blankets shares the message that the best EMF protection is Free.
Sometimes shielding pouches and "5G Blockers" or pocket shields can decrease radiation levels and sometimes increase meter reading levels.
That's because shielding cases, clothing and anti-radiation products are not always effective and actually can increase radiation levels around the shielded area. And any part of the wireless device (cellphones, WiFi, Tablets, etc) that are not completely covered is still EMITTING RF radiation.
Most shielding fabric IS up to 99% effective- BUT that effectiveness applies ONLY to the area that is covered. That 99% effective shielding fabric can deflect and make exposure higher and worse for you- all around the area that is being protected.
D.J. Panagopoulos, and G.P. Chrousos, authors of a study on EMF shielding explain why shielding is actually a risk:
"One cannot modify the radiation (frequency, waveform) once it has been emitted by a device. One can only attenuate it (reduce its intensity). Modification would only be possible by modifying the electronic circuits within the devices. Even if that were the case with these products, which is not, once the emitted signal is modified or attenuated, the device (mobile phone, etc.) would lose its ability to connect with the network and communicate. If one simply attenuates the signal without modifying it, which is possible, the mobile phone again will have difficulty in establishing connection with the base antennas and automatically will emit a stronger signal/radiation/EMF in order to be able to connect/communicate . . . .This is why it is dangerous to put the mobile phone within any kind of metal box/ sheath/holster etc. in order to carry it on the clothes/body while it is turned on. Any such product will attenuate the incoming signal, . . thus it will attenuate the connectivity of the mobile phone. The less the connectivity is, the stronger the emission of the device becomes in order to be able to connect with the network."
This important 2019 Scientific Research Report
Radiation and EMF Protection and Risks has just been published. The research study covers how and why EMF has biological effects and the many types of shields including chips, cases and home shielding.
Cases, Chips, Necklaces and Harmonizers Have Been Around A LONG time...
A decade AGO after discovering patients had aggravated symptoms after depending on these types of "EMF protection" a MEDICAL ALERT was published.
Dr. Carlo, wrote a Medical Alert - He cautioned people with EMF sensitivity against relying upon widely-available EMR protection products to prevent the effects of EMF exposure. He noted that EMF sensitive individuals were reporting the opposite effect: people found their symptoms and/or sensitivity worsened. Specifically, severe “symptom relapses.” Dr. Carlo noted:
- An alarmingly high number of patients with electro-hypersensitivity and other related conditions are reporting serious symptom relapses after periods of time when symptoms were apparently mitigated by use of products that claim to be protective against electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) related disease.
- The symptom relapses are reportedly more severe than the symptoms that defined the original illnesses – suggesting that the patients are sicker after the use of the purported protective products than before the use.
- We fear that consumers are being lured into a false sense of security by their use of widely-available products purporting to prevent disease – causing consumers to unknowingly compound the effects of dangerous exposures by increasing their use of wireless devices.
- In the United States as well as globally, no steps have been taken by either the Food and Drug Administration or any other regulatory authority to protect patients and consumers from this apparent danger.
Thus, our intent is to empower consumers to protect themselves in this regard.
Scientific Underpinning
They found that when people with EHS used different types of "mitigation" or "Anti EMF" products like chips and necklaces they actually felt better but it didn't last. They felt like they were protected so they kept using their WiFi and cellphones
• Several patients with electro-hypersensitivity and other conditions associated in the scientific literature with EMR exposure in all effect windows are reporting symptom relapses that are believed to be more severe than the symptoms that led to their original diagnosis. Dr. Carlo pointed out-
“When symptoms are not addressed comprehensively– for example, using symptom amelioration without simultaneous elimination of exposure – cell membrane adverse reaction and damage continue to occur while the patient is assuming the cause of the problem has been eliminated. This lulls patients into a false sense of security, causing them to aggravate their exposures through the increased use of their wireless devices. When the damage reaches a critically harmful level, even the symptom amelioration can no longer be sustained by the damaged cells.”
Now... Our Top 10 Tech Wellness Top EMF Protection Tips To Reduce EMF Radiation-that Actually Work!
1. Maintain A Smart Distance From Your Smart Phone, Laptops and WiFi.
Why? Radiation exposure drops significantly as you move it away from your body. By orders of magnitude. EMFwise has a really good page of charts showing the safest distance you can be from any wireless device. The lengths are very conservative and the recommendations tell you the approximate distances required to reach the Salzburg Precautionary Limit of 2001 and 2002. They point out that with the high levels of power density coming from our newest devices is requiring that we move further and further away because effects are being reported at lower and lower levels of exposure. But if you want to be super-safety minded check out the page.
2. Use Speaker Phone Instead Of Putting The Phone To Your Ear
I love to put my phone in a stand, at least one foot away or hang it off my wrist using a strap. If it’s a sensitive matter or you just want to model good netiquette try a quality wired headset- one with air tubes is best.
3. Use A Faraday Bag To Completely Block Signal.
A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields. 100% protective Anti Radiation faraday bags keep all wireless RF radiation from getting in and connecting with our devices and they keep the EMF radiation emitted from our phones and laptops from getting out and exposing us to harmful wireless energy
4. When texting, use stylus.
Set the phone on a solid surface, whip out a stylus and everyone in Starbucks will be instantly intrigued and you'll will enjoy some distance between the EMF and your fingertips. Many people are finding relief from "scrolling numbness" Have you ever noticed that you're fingers start to feel numb or tingle after touching the screen for awhile? That could be there are RF radiation or Magnetic fields coming from the screen. A stylus will help.
5. Whenever possible, just switch to Airplane Mode on all your devices.
And reduce radiation by turning off WiFi and BlueTooth when you're not using them. Do this on your laptop, tablet and computer. Remember that all the different functions eliminate a type of EMF: Bluetooth low level radiation, cellphone signal radiation and WiFi radiation are all spewing EMR (electromagnetic radiation.)
6. Eliminate Radiation and EMF from your rejuvenating spaces.
And seriously my friends, please don’t bring your phone to bed with you! A recent survey showed that 71% of people who own a smartphone, sleep with it! That’s embarrassing. Here’s something else very sad: 35% of respondents said their first thought in the morning is about their smartphone; 10% said it was for their significant other. Th Best practice is to leave your phone in another room and get an analog ALARM CLOCK If you feel you MUST have it close by, at least switch to airplane mode before you turn in.
7. Turn Your WiFi off at Night or whenever it's not in use.
The WiFi is likely the greatest source of radiation in your home, so don't go near it to turn it off, instead I like to use a handy Wifi kill switch to make it easier and safer.
8. Watch Your Bars And Signal Strength
The fewer signal bars your device is showing, the harder it is trying to connect with an antenna, WiFi, or base station. The EMF coming from your device can double in some cases. So be aware. If you’ve only got a bar or two, make sure you aren’t holding the phone and push it as far away as you can. You might also benefit from the EMF Protection No EMF WiFi Router.
9. Connect Your Wireless Devices Without WiFi By Hard Wiring To The Internet.
Try Connecting Your Devices to The Internet. You can hardwire with Shielded Ethernet cable and you'll find an adapter for all your devices. This hardwiring hack completely eliminates wireless EMF radiation.
10. Remove Your Smart meter.
It's really the best option for many reasons. The full story here. If you can't remove it, you can remove some of the radiation by covering it.
