Reading Apple Privacy Nutrition Labels Will Make You Want To Go On A Digital Diet
Turns Out Apps Are Collecting An Unhealthy Amount Of Data On You. We're going To Tell Which Apps want to know the most about you and which apps want to share your data?
That's why I love these new Data Privacy Labels. We've Found top 50 Apps For You And We Found Others That Offer More Protection For Your Data.
Apple made these privacy labels mandatory as point of entry for any App in the Apple store.
Here's Everything You Need To Know About The Privacy Nutrition Labels. What The Labels Mean and How They Work
- The Labels are Designed to help anyone using or thinking about downloading an app, understand how that app is handling your data
- Apple requires every app to submit a label and trusts the developer to accurately reflect their companies practices
- Apple told Apps they had the option of NOT telling you they were collecting data IF they were not sharing it or disclosing it.
- Apps were given Categories to bucket the types of data they might collect. Categories are labeled things like Contact, Financial and Sensitive Information
- The labels are broken down into Data Linked To You and Data Used To Track You

What Does Data Linked To You On Privacy Labels Mean?
- Data Linked To You Means that whatever the App is collecting about what you're doing on the app is directly connected to your identity. It could be linked via your account or your device or something else. But the point is - they know it's you. They could do things to make it anonymous- but they don't.
What Does Data Used To Track You on the Privacy Notifications Mean?
- Ahh, Tracking. That's the really annoying and intrusive part of these companies watching what you do online. What happens here is the app you downloaded records your device or your use ID or your contact information and gives it to or marries it with Third Party Data and they use it to target you a you move from app to app or site to site.
Your Data- perhaps your name and everything you looked at, can be shared with a data broker or advertising company.
What Kind Of Things Are Collected In Each Category?
There are so many different things that can an app can collect about you. Much of it depends on what you share. When you log into Instagram or TikTok or Facebook or Google for instance you might reveal everything from your birthday to your family members names, to what medical condition you're interested in.

So knowing what's in the Privacy Label Categories is Super Important.
Apple put together a guide for developers- here's an example of how detailed the information collected can be:
We checked the Privacy Nutrition Labels of the top 75 Apps at the App Store. You'll be stunned by the amount of Information They Collect and How They Share It.
Here's a quick recap of what each Category can contain:
Your Contact Info- name, address, phone, email etc
Your Health & Fitness: This one's pretty cray. Health and medical data including Clinical Records, your personal details from the HealthKit-- your movement, research you participated in and how much and how often you exercise
Your Financial Info: credit card, bank account, credit score-even how much you make
Your Location: Exactly where you are and when you're there
Your Sensitive Info. C'mon, isn't all of this data about you sensitive? Well, it gets pretty darn intrusive in this category that includes racial or ethnic data, your sexual orientation, political affiliation, philosophical information, any disabilities etc.
Your Contacts- that would be your address book, anyone you've reached out to through your phone.
Your User Content- Hmm, don't think you're gonna like this- your emails and texts(yes, including who they're to and what you said) photos, videos, recordings, the games you played and actually, any other content you generated in that app-think of those period tracking apps here.
Your Browsing History- speaks for itself
Your Search History- same, your searches
Your User ID and Device ID- Name, or the handle you use or your customer information and/or your device's ID
Your Purchases: That would be a history of anything you buy
Your Usage data: Everything about how you use that app that's tracking you-when you logged on, your taps, how you scrolled, what you listened to, the ads you saw and big thing called "other" which means anything and everything else you did, saw or heard in the app.
Your Other data- That would be any other data- that's not mentioned above- any data at all.
Instagram and Facebook are the Same Company- Notice that They Use the OTHER DATA and CONTACT INFO AND IDENTIFIERS categories to track you.
Apple tells Developers OTHER DATA - could be any data about you and IDENTIFIERS could be your Instagram or Facebook name, or your account and your CONTACT INFO could be your name, address, email, birthday and or phone number.
