So, What is it?
Electromagnetic Frequencies (also known as EMF) come in many forms:
Mainly 3 types:
- Electric fields
- Magnetic fields
- Non-ionizing Radio frequency
Our main concern at Tech Wellness is non-ionizing radiofrequency – usually shortened to “RF” – the kind of energy associated with wireless communications.
The train tracks of the information age. They are invisible, information carrying radio waves that can travel long distances and link us to the digital world. Radio signals Smartphones, laptops, and WiFi access points are the most common examples of products using this technology.
For years, scientists, and people who find themselves sensitive to exposure to EMF have debated whether or not this radiation is harmful--or harmless.
While the electronics industry can point to a number of studies that conclude that EMF are completely benign, The World Health Organization recently classified EMFs as a Possible Carcinogen. Should you be worried about the EMF exposure that you and your family get every day? That's obviously your decision.
Just like there were people who decided early on that cigarettes were dangerous--long before the rest of the world--you're most likely here because you're concerned and want to know more about EMF's. This article will give you an overview, based on our 20 years of studying this subject.
Interesting fact: Every being on Earth creates its own (small) EMF field. But that's nothing compared to the radiation generated by the billions of electronic devices we have deployed over the last few decades. These devices radiate EMF's at varying frequencies and corresponding wavelengths.
More and more scientists believe that when our human bodies are bombarded by the EMF fields emitted by wireless devices, they overlap and interact--often in not healthy ways.
These outside EMFs are wildly different from the ones in our bodies. When they intersect, it can actually change the naturally-occurring frequencies in our body into frequencies that can cause what scientists call "unhealthy pathology"-- i.e. cellular/tissue damage. This is especially true when the device in question is so physically close to you that it generates heat in your body.
Have you ever held a smartphone next to your head and felt your ear get warm? How about your laptop heating up your lap? That's a clear sign that radiation is entering your body and changing your biological material. This is especially troubling for children who spend more and more time with screens at younger and younger ages. They are more susceptible because their brains and organs are not fully developed.
What about the exposure that doesn't generate heat? Because you're surrounded all the time by all kinds of RF. Science doesn't completely understand this, however, as we noted earlier, there is enough evidence and concern that the World Health Organization has classified radio frequency (RF) non-ionizing radiation as Group 2B - possibly carcinogenic. The precautionary principle (or precautionary approach) Precaution may be defined as "caution in advance," "caution practiced in the context of uncertainty," or informed prudence- an expression of a need by decision-makers to anticipate harm before it occurs.

Why aren’t more people talking about it?
There’s a complicated answer, but the short answer is money. Cellphone companies have huge sway in Washington and it’s easy to deny a danger that’s invisible to the naked eye. We know this because one of our Tech Wellness Expert's is Dr. George Carlo, a physicist who used to work for the cell phone industry. He was the scientist who was hired to show the public that EMFs were harmless and nothing to worry about. So when he discovered how problematic and potentially harmful EMFs actually are, he joined forces with Safer Technologies years ago and now we look to his research so Tech Wellness to educate people and create awareness.

And remember - all of these exposures are cumulative—it all adds up, so whatever you can do NOW to lessen your total exposure can have a positive impact on your overall health and well-being. It helps to think of EMF as allergens. Some people can eat lobster just fine, and others can have lethal anaphylactic shock reaction. Everyone reacts differently to EMF exposure and just because one person doesn’t feel anything, doesn’t make another person’s sensitivities untrue. Damages from EMF can happen over time, or one can become sensitive with a short burst of radiation.
If we had known then, what we know now….
The point is that our understanding of continual exposure to environmental hazards evolves continually. Often, it seems, we invent and implement a solution to make our world better… then we find it winds up harming us after prolonged exposure.
Remember when doctors advertised their favorite cigarettes as being able to “improve your health?” Remember when Life Magazine carried the picture of a smiling girl in a cloud of DDT and touted the deadly insecticide as the first truly “safe” product in its class? Remember when asbestos was proclaimed the economical and effective solution for schools and public buildings? Remember?
Clearly, the best course of action is taking responsibility and making your own decisions, taking action you deem appropriate. The actions might include simple things, like putting your smartphone in “airplane” mode when you’re not actively using it, using a wired air-tube headset and keeping the phone away from the body and being aware of WiFi access points in your home and office.
